JUST TRY.
“Today, in sociology class, we popcorn read a passage about the Nacirema peoples + their rituals. Now, I know every person is not a perfect reader. But you would be surprised of how many people don’t even try. They find a word that they don’t know + instead of attempting to use their common knowledge they already own (like sounding out words) to pronounce the foreign word, they simply ask, “ how do you say this,” or they expect the teacher to just tell them. We have become so accustomed to people telling us the answers. Why? The essence of fear. All of our lives, we’ve been taught right vs. wrong, good vs. evil, live vs. dark. So when we are introduced to something new without someone telling us if it is right or wrong, fear of being wrong takes over. We are so afraid to try. because we believe we will fail. However, we posses a lot more knowledge than we think, we own a lot more knowledge than we will ever know. This society, just makes us frightened to embrace what we have/know because we are always focusing on what we don’t. It’s not anyone’s fault. It’s society. But we can change. We can try.
