regulating the nervous system.
Have you ever experienced something where you were habitually reacting to a situation?
Like you almost didn’t even need to be present to have the reaction.
Like your body was fully prepared to have that reaction no matter what.
This is because our brain is like a computer.
Because our brain is like a computer, it’s easily programmable. This can be very helpful for scheduling routine daily tasks like brushing our teeth and making our bed. But when we are brought up in homes that do not foster our emotional well-being, our nervous system and brains inherently learn that there is an outside threat that needs protecting from. In an effort to protect you, your body learns coping mechanisms that help you filter through pain. These may be logical tendencies or tendencies that make you detach from your body/self altogether.
This is why it is so important to understand what kind of state our nervous system is in, so that we can help soothe it into a state of relaxation,
which is ultimately when our manifestations come to us.
Our nervous system can be split into two categories - the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system.
The parasympathetic nervous system
is the system responsible for regulating your emotions, producing happy chemicals and bringing a sense of peace to your life. If this system is out of whack, you may have a dopamine deficiency or be unable to experience “happy” emotions without feeling some sort of negative emotion (usually guilt).
The sympathetic nervous system
is our flight or fight or reactionary system. Due to the way our society lives, this system is often put on overdrive. Many people live predominantly in this state.
When we activate the parasympathetic nervous system from a sympathetic state, we experience high levels of dopamine rush as well as other chemical releases within the brain. This can also produce high gamma wave states, which are known for transcendental experiences.
When we activate the sympathetic nervous system after being in the parasympathetic state, we may experience past emotions (usually ones we are suppressing) flooding back into our awareness. This is normal. This is because our nervous system is the communicating factor of our body and so when we are frozen in trauma states (being stuck in one system too long), we can actually alter the ability of our body to communicate clearly what it is that we are needing.
Consistent practice moving between these two states of being is called “breathwork” and can be especially helpful for those who are looking to regulate their system to a state of NEW equilibrium.
Because our body is able to be programmed in ways that may hurt us,
that means that the opposite is also true: our body can be programmed in a way that can and will help us.
So how do we do this?
Self-regulation.
Self-care.
Self-concept.
Love yourself.
Teach yourself on an actionable level the beliefs and habits you wish to uphold in your life.
Don’t settle for anything less than what you’ve set your standards for.
Self-regulation of the nervous system allows us to take accountability for our actions through monitoring of our systems.
We notice when we are feeling worked up about something.
We can tell when something is bothering us.
We know.
So with that knowing, we can take it and apply the act of self-care.
Choosing to chose to regulate.
Taking a moment to breathe.
Saying no to going out because you need a night in.
Prioritizing you and making that a non-negotiable.
Ultimately, this will build your self-concept, which will be the new beliefs and habits that you uphold in your reality,
which will create your new personal reality.
Our nervous system and our emotions are one of our greatest tools.
When we learn to understand them, we can learn to nurture them and then they are able to ADAPT and do the work for us!
Being sad is okay.
Being depressed is okay.
But what’s your ability to ask for help like?
What’s your ability to change like?
How comfortable are you with holding yourself accountable?
Your emotions are not you.
But your nervous system is yours to regulate and take care of.
That is the work.
